After one attempt to replace a dead 8V engine with a 16V in my 82T, the result was a failure. That replacement engine was shot too. That's the risk you take with anything taken from a J-yard car. Too bad there's so much that goes into exchanging an engine before you find that out! So there I was, faced with the decision to either scrap the whole thing, or take advantage of the J yard warranty that I paid for and exchange the bad one for yet another one. And so on until I got a good one. Only problem was that I didn't have the time or space where I live to do it one more time. Nor did I have the patience to be frank. Then I went out to the J yard for a look-see. And there it was in the far corner - an 86 16V turbo automatic, the exterior and interior all beat to hell, but a clean engine and an odometer that read 60 K miles. I looked in the glove box and found an old registration listing the ownership to an import company not far from where I live. I called and inquired from the previous owner about the car. He said the milage was correct and the reason why it was in such bad shape was that since purchased it stayed outside in the hot sun, the interior, the paint and rubber parts baking away. Using that engine, I decided to give my 82 one more chance at life, but I needed the space to do it. That's where LA based SAAB wizard Walter Wong came to the rescue. When I explained my situation and what I was trying to do (mate an 86 16V T engine with an 88T tranny and transplanted into an 82 900 using the original CIS fuel system and wiring harness), he offered a space at his shop for me to do it there. He had done the same thing with his 85 900 and a transplanted 2.3 16V engine, so he knew it was entirely possible. The next few days was nail biting time, hoping that someone else didn't yank that engine before I did. Luck and timing were on my side though, and to make a long story short, that engine now sits in my car and it works like a charm! Purrs like a kitten at idle and roars like a lion when accelerating! It's just a feeling mind you, but when I'm accelerating and feeling the increased power compared with the original 82 8VT, I feel that this engine's stock power potential is not being used. Since I'm still using the old 82 APC system, perhaps that's the limit at present. Could also be the wastegate valve, which I haven't changed from it's original setting while configured for an automatic transmission. I'll know in time and a few tweaks.
