I think the weight of many keys pulling on the ignition module on "standard" dash ignitions can spoil them. When the keyhole is in the console, the keys rest on the console. I've never replaced an igntion switch on a Saab (cleaned them a few times, things fall in)
On many Mercedes, the ignition switches only last a few years because of heavy keys.
