I went out to my 83 900 Turbo this morning and got in as usual. It turned over and fired right up as usual. 15 seconds later it DIED...very unusual. Hmmmm.....crank, crank, crank......rest, rest, rest....crank, run......die. crank, crank, crank.....rest, rest, rest.
We developed a pattern where it would run for 15 or 20 seconds and then die. It had to set for about 60 seconds in between. Luckily my 86 was handy to provide a little boost to the battery. Every few 'starter on' clicks of the ignition the security alarm would go off...bizarre!
I checked the oil, it was at the MIN mark (those darned turbo cooling lines leak faster and faster each week, I swear) so I put a quart in, wondering if there was an oil pressure shut-off switch on the beast.
I opened up my gas cap, because pressure builds up in there and I haven't had time to check out the vent system yet. Sure enough, there was a lot of air that came rushing out...yet no change in the situation.
I tapped around on a few of the likely components under the hood to no avail.
I looked at the gas gauge and miles on the trip odometer....it was between 1/4 and Reserve, had at least 30 miles left on the tripo before I'd normally fuel up, but I WAS parked nose down on a slight hill...but it ran just fine last night when I parked it. Hmmm....it's worth a try.....I got some old Coleman Fuel from the garage and dumped in a gallon, and she fired right up! Ran for 2 minutes, I shut her off and fired her up again...all systems go.
I made a run for it and everything has been fine for the rest of the day. I think the problem with the alarm was a loose ground connection at the battery terminal that I discovered when hooking up the jumper cables.
I've had the Turbo for all of a month now and am still getting used to her 'personality'. Most of her foibles are truly humorous.....I'm glad this one turned out to be so, too. It'll be a sad day when I sell the 86 (need to do that very soon) and give up my safety net.
I'll be holding my breath tomorrow morning.......
I hope most of your problems are resolved as easily as mine.
Cheers,
Dave
