Shawshank,
My 900 also had a terrible leak--it started all of a sudden. It was such a bad leak I had to take off the p/s belt for fear of running the pump dry!
I found some of the Valvoline SynPower synthetic p/s fluid at the parts store and topped up with it a couple times. Result: hardly any leaks at all (comparatively).
After using the SynPower fluid (tan bottle), I could drive about 1-2 tanks worth of gas before putting topping up the p/s fluid again.
However, keep your eye on it: after just over a year of using the Valvoline, the leak on my car is beginning to worsen. My '84 S will have to have a p/s rack soon, I'm afraid. There's only so much stop-leak can do!
In the meantime, though, I've changed over to the regular Valvoline p/s fluid with stop leak (red bottle). It isn't synthetic, apparently; this should help because I've heard synthetic oils can seep out of tiny places where old-style oil molecules can't go between (read engine and tranny oil posts). I'm hoping the red bottle fluid will buy me some more time...
