As Eric notes, it only goes in one way. But since you adjust the timing by rotating the distributor, you can get the timing *waaay* off it you're not careful. And it can be pretty hard to set the timing if the engine won't run.

Take the precaution of pre-setting the engine. I pull the cap off the distributor, and rotate the engine until the rotor points to the thin line etched on the face of the distributor (cylinder #1). There are a few ways to rotate the engine - typical is to throw a wrench on a pulley. This can be hard with the spark plugs in place. My favorite, if it's a manual tranny, is to put the car in 5th gear on level terrain, and with the brake off, push on the bumper/fender. You can get the engine to turn a little - enough to adjust things.

Now just pull off the rotor, and remove the bolt that holds the plate under the distributor in place. Note the position of the notch on the shaft where the rotor fit. Pull the old distributor out. Pre-rotate the shaft on the new distributor to approximately the same position, and slip the shaft in. Replace the retaining plate and bolt, and rotate the distributor body so that the line lines up with the rotor properly.

The timing will be off, but not by much. It'll run well enough to slap a timing light on and set it properly.

I've gone into way too much detail here. The only trick you want to do is to install the replacement distributor in the same position as the old one.
