Hi there,
KevinK, I believe, told me a new radiator should help with this.
The flow just isn't what it used to be after 18-20 years of crud accumulates in the narrow radiator coils. A simple flush won't get all of them out, a chemical flush like Prestone might help, but an "acid bath" with radiator removed from the car (or simply buying a new radiator, since old one must be removed anyway) is probably best bet.
I live in the northern foothills in NC and the heat isn't as terrible as some places south and east of me. Summer days might get in the low 90s. My SAAB seems happiest when the temps are in the mid-70s or lower, though. Any hotter temps make the temp guage needle stay (slightly) above half all the time, going to about 3/4 or even 4/5 during stop-n-go traffic or idling.
Even with air temps in the 50-70°F degree range, my SAAB's temp guage climbs to 2/3 during climbing long hills/mountains, like Highway 421 up to Boone, I-40 to Asheville, etc.
This said, I still haven't replaced my radiator. However, I should--mine is 20 years old now!
