AC compressor refurbishing

The last thing to reconnect after a recent engine transplant is the AC system. The 86 compressor was the only piece that I haven't cleaned, the rest of it having been flushed over a year ago when converted to R134. With the appropriate gear puller and home made bracket I was able to pull the pulley off and remove the back plate. Aside from draining the former R12 oil, I noticed the bearing ring that bears most of the friction as the compressor turns showed signs of overheating, as well as scoring. For an engine with 60K miles since 1986, it's hard to tell why that component would show wear. Perhaps after a dozen years went by the AC was never recharged and the oil dried up, but the driver at the time didn't know any better and drove with it in that condition. The good news is that the flip side to that scored bearing ring was in good shape, which I reinstalled with the good side "up." I reattached the front plate after cleaning and applying silicone sealant around the O-ring. Compressor is now ready for many more years of cooling my car with R134a.
