When doing a Saab head gasket the first time it is always a challenge to get the camshafts back in timing.
I don't know how many Saabs I have seen through the years where another shop set it up incorrectly.
The symptoms differ from case to case depending on if the exhaust or intake or both camshafts are behind or ahead.
Both camshafts are always "behind" even on a brand new engine, not much but still behind.
As the chain and guides wear, the more camshaft index/notch falls behind of the index mark on cam journal.
Picture is not the best but I hope you can use it as a guide.
