John,
I read of your fuel pump leak problem on the Saab Network Digest, and your description accurately matched the problem that we just had corrected on our 1990 900S (130,000 miles). Initially we suspected the fuel pump sealing ring and the collar on the pump, but that was not the problem. Our independent mechanic determine that fuel was leaking up through the electrical connector mounted on top of the fuel pump. When he removed the connector plug he noted evidence of arcing and that part of the plug connector had deteriorated. Naturally, the electrical connector is not available as a separate part. After about a week of attempting to located a used fuel pump (problem here was that most of the used pumps that were removed by a salvage yard had plastic pieces that had been damaged/broken in the removal process by the salvage yard). Ultimately, we decided to bite the bullet and just have our mechanic install a new fuel pump. So, now the leak and fuel smell is gone, and a side benefit is that the engine runs better and the car exhibits improved pick-up; guess that the old pump may have been getting a bit tired and was not pumping up to specification.
So, take a really close look at the electrical connector on the pump with the engine running to determine if that is where your leak is.
Good luck with this repair – it had us stumped for quite a while until our mechanic was able to correctly diagnose the problem.
