used Engine -mechanical condition question

Recently I bought a used engine, sight unseen.
Hold the flames, please.
The engine is from a 1986 BMW 635i (an inline six, 3.4 Liters) and if
you'll excuse my crossover, I want to run this by the Saab board
because of the generally high level of competance here.
Upon receiving the engine, I did compression check with it on an engine
stand. Numbers ranged from 85 to 131 and widely scattered at that. I put
a tablespoon of oil in the 85 cylinder and a retest scored 116. At this
point I'm thinking it needs rings at least, and that I'll pull the head
and proceed based upon what I discover.
Today, most curiously, the guy that sold the engine to me just wrote
that the prior owner of the donor car had recently spent $5000 on the
engine. This is really hard to believe as the only evidence I see of
recent work is a little Permatex on the oil pan gasket. Otherwise, there
is the usual oil seepage from a few points, more appropriate to the
106,000 mile engine I expected.
Therefore, the question of the hour is whether there is anything I could
have done to screw up the compression test.
Does an engine need to be warm, or recently run to get accurate
compression readings?
Might it make a difference if I spun the engine around on the stand to splash oil on the cylinder walls and then did another test?
Thanks, all.
