How you drive it and how you take care of it is the key to how long they last. In spite of what you hear on this board, five speeds have about as many problems as autos. If Hondas and Toyotas had as much power as Saabs and were driven like Saabs they'd have trans troubles too. I just sold a '91TC auto last summer with 130,000 on the original trans with no problems nor signs of problems. I currently have an '84 turbo and a 93 turbo convertible both with automatics. I've also had three 9000s with automatics and haven't had problems with any of them. The linkage on Saab 5 speeds has always left much to be desired, and to shift them fast you have to "muscle" them much more than I prefer. In addition the 2.3 9ks tend to break the front tires loose very easily which the automatic moderates. Having had both at the same time, if you really hit it right the 5 speed is faster, but 6 out of ten times the auto will win 0 to 60. The classic autos with only three speeds won't beat the 5 speeds ever and they are geared a little low. I like driving them however, they give the car a quieter more refined feel.
