As the bearing wears- a normal effect is hot exhaust bypass and oil to the intake; result is smoke from from tail- esp. at higher boost. But I would not say this in all cases. My experince is massive failure and an instant "S" model.
That sound could be worn belts, leaking bypass, or hole in turbo pipes (or just about anything else that moves under the hood); my car pings a bit above 15lbs, but i would not put it in the "ping" sound catagory.
Turbine may be rubbing against housing?? A big if and an easy check- remove "cold" end of compressor and look for obvious wear; give the shaft some motion up-down; after 195K some play is OK, but by some I talking MMs- not CMs.
I've experience red- even near white, but never a see-thru housing. Could not have added life.
Even if it dies- you do not need a hybrid replacement- plenty of crunched 900Ts willing to part with younger turbos out there.
Good luck- Steve
PS- if it helps, I "worry about nothing" all the time. That is the great part of the BB.
