It *is* possible to replace a broken chain with the engine in the car, but it's not easy. A tech in VT did that for a friend's 900 when the chain broke on the way to a ski resort.
If you can fish the ends of the chain up, you may be able to use the townsend imports procedure. But, be aware that, if the engine was turning when the chain broke, then there are probably some bent valves.
If the chain ends can't be fished up, then the main pulley and timing chain cover have to be removed. It's very tight work and one stud will have to be ground off to remove the timing chain cover.
Removing the head will make it easier to remove the timing chain cover. And the car is probably due for a headgasket.
