Saab used a bigger drain plug head for just a year, Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Mon, 3 May 2004 08:45:00 In Reply to: 13mm to 19mm drain plug, Alex C., Mon, 3 May 2004 06:52:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
somewhere around 87-89.
Suddenly the dealers started to replace transmission/oil pan casings left and right under warranty due to cracks around the drain plug and Saab came out with a recall that the 19mm head plug was to be discontinued and a 13mm plug should be used instead (which they had been using since way back).
You see, if a grease monkey see a 19mm head it means that he has to bring out the BIG tools. If it's only 13mm he use a smaller tool.
Many quick lube or auto stores places are using bigger heads on their substitute drain plugs (everywhere from 14-19 mm) and will install them when they have stripped the head of the 13mm original one due to use of wrong tools.
It is a tremendous amount of risk to leave the 19mm plug in if you are using quick lube places because at some point and time someone WILL bring out the BIG tool and crack the transmission/oil pan casing.
