Wheel noise - CV joint? Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Mon, 3 May 2004 12:45:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For those of you following my master cylinder project, it's finally done.
Now that I have new calipers, new pads and a new master cylinder I need to revisit this noise that's still occuring. It is definitely not the brake splash shield. When I turned the rotors with the car up on jack stands there was no noise regardless of position of steering wheel center, right or left.
It is coming from the left front wheel. When I drive straight there is no noise. When I turn left the noise is there...when I turn right it is much louder. It is a swoosh - swoosh sound of metal on metal that is directly related to wheel rotation speed.
One of the guys I work with suggested a CV joint going bad. How do I test and diagnose this? If it is a CV joint, how expensive and complicated of a job is that to replace? Easier to replace entire shaft as an assembly? Any other ideas? People before suggested a bearing but wouldn't that make noise all of the time?
Thanks.
