There was an old-style tensioner (pre 88 at least) that isn't reliable. The newer style is very easy to check, just lock the engine and then undo the inner bolt(~13mm) on the tensioner housing (housing is ~21mm). You'll then be able to pull out the actual tensioner and measure the extension. I believe that extension under 13mm is fine. Saab critera for recomending timing chain replacement is based only on how far the tensioner has extended.
I'll bet that the rattle you're hearing is either from oil that's too thin or else a hardened upper timing chain guide pad. When you have time pull the valve cover off and look at the rubber pad above the chain - $5 says it is rock hard and the source of your noise. A new pad and valve cover gasket runs less than $30 at saabnet site sponsors.
What weight oil do you use? The Rotella 15w40 I have in my car sure is quiet.
