Dilema: Use OG900 or buy NG900 (need reliable car)

Hello all,
I am currently going to school at the University of Minnesota (minneapolis) and using my 1983 900. I really love the car, however I am doing an internship on Long Island in the summer and need a reliable car for NY traffic.
Having the car here is no prob since my mom's house is close by and I can always work on it there. When I go to NY, however I need something reliable that will not put me in bad situations.
Also, I plan to make many road trips along the East Coast, so I want a car that will manage that.
Now as I mentioned I love my car and am personally against buying new cars. However, I am seriously wondering how much reliability I can expect from it.
Please give me advice.
I am willing to put a grand into making it more reliable, but part of me tells me I should just get a used NG900.
Here are the stats on my current 83 900:
Mileage: 100k
Tranny: Manual
Please Advice!
TIA Guys
