Clear coat is a tricky bitch. I would say no, don't! First thought I have is when ever you clear something; it will enhance what ever in under it. CC has never filled in any thing. It will always show the defect better. I am right in the middle of re-paint my 85. It had zero CC left on it. Every time I washed her I had a red rag and red water running down the driveway. Depending on what clear coat you have and what the viscosity is, there is an outside chance you can buff and polish the basecoat to a nice finish. Then CC over it right away. The trick will be to polish the base coat down even and not break though.

I don?t work in a body shop, I work on OEM trucks. (GM) I work with Dupont and PPG paints. (Seibert Powder coatings too) There may be some more experienced people out there but from my 6 yrs I have never been able to do something like that. I?d worry more about the quality of the CC. (The finish) fish-eyes, sand scratches, and hazing. The biggest problem would be the viscosity, how fast is it. If you want to fill-in the ?gaps? you?d want a slow viscosity. Less risk of sags. But the draw back is solvent popping. I?ve always had trouble with popping, the gassing of solvent on thick films. I?d shoot for a 2-3 mil surface.

You might try this, spray a 1-2 mil coat. Then try and polish the shit out of it and then re-CC over it.
