It could indeed be the slave. Check for brake fluid dripping down through the drain slot at the bottom of the bellhousing for a dead giveaway of slave failure.
But, it takes a lot of brake fluid to thoroughly bleed the clutch hydraulics and my experience is that pressure bleeding is the best way to do it. When I put a master in my car, I bled at least 2 pints of brake fluid before I got a solid clutch pedal feel. It's amazing how much air can collect in the clutch master and how little air it takes to make the clutch hydraulics fail.
So, you may want to try bleeding it again before you go into it further.
