>I have a $500 quote from a body shop in California to fab a custom piece and weld it in. My old dealer in cleveland said this is a $20-ish part and 1.5 hour labor job. simple. Californians are totally scared of east coast cars.
I've had both rear shock towers on my '86 900S welded to fix the rust.
Right side was done about 6 years ago, for $80 (cash, $100 if I wanted a receipt ;-), the left side I had done last year, $130.
Total time was about an hour for each. No special reinforcement plate, and the right side has lasted 6 years. I did specify that it be undercoated (both times), got a thin coat of a rubbery compound sprayed on both, don't know brand name, but it's holding up.
$500 sounds a bit much/ridiculous. Ask how much without a receipt ;-).
