sometimes it indicates a headgasket that has just started to go bad. When there's a pinhole leak in the gasket, coolant will sometimes slowly leak into one of the cylinders overnight and cause it to sputter like you describe. When the coolant burns off, it runs normally.
Just to let you know the other possibilities.
