Hi..
well, as part of my intro here, and being new in USA from Netherlands and CA smog stuff, my experiences..
just moved in Belmont (Bay Area) and have been looking for a c900 after i sold my 99 ('83) back home.
I recently bought a silver '84 900T8 4 door saloon. Not knowing that the smog is usually the sellers responsibility , i bought it without new smog cert. and wanted to get everything fixed for DMV title transfer. It needed new wheelbearrings too, plus balljoints. I went to San Rafael to Peter Zaab (great guys) to get it fixed first, since it sounded pretty bad. smooth job. good job too.
so then i went in positive and happy mood (woow what a difference the 900T to my previous '83 99 carbed) to a smog place in Milbrae. it failed in pre-test on both smog and visual, they let it fail visually since their picture of the engine wasn't a Turbo version that would telll them it has one PVC crankhose less than the 900S. I had to insist it was correct but couldnt prove since i didnt havethe Haynes in the car. next time i want a place that knows these engines.. that is why i didnt let them fix the emissions.
it failed the smog on CO mainly (and one time the HC)
15 mph
HC max:135 Meas:138
CO max:0.83 meas:1.31
NO max:1136 meas:425
25mph
HC max:110 meas:85
CO max:0.63 meas:1.81
NO max:996 meas: 281
so, then i went to Parker in Mountain View (from Belmont where i live easier to go home than from San Rafael) and they checked engine, and stuff pbut couldnt find anything really bad, but i guess since they dont have a dynometer the engine doesnt get the heavy job with them as with smogcenters to provoke high emissions.
i took it to a test only place in downtown SF Clean Air Smog (i had an SF advertiser coupon, and my gf works at advertiser...) , and it failed.
surpisingly with much higher numbers on CO , while only 5 days in between or so..
notably : CO were respectively 2.19 and 2.01 all of a sudden.nox was notably lower on 15mph, and HC slightly higher on both.
so, now being fed up with this new circus to me, i called the guys today that Planet Saab use for their smogs. automotive specialists in Bryant street. I told them to have the engine rightly adjusted top pass the test. it took them an hour tweaking and stuff, and it passed finally :-).
i wouldnt say flying... and i have the impression i get less presure in the Turbo.. the needle doesnt go that high as i thougt it went the other week.
HC is now 63/58 , CO 0.59/0.63 (at max!), and NO is now much higher.... 1125/380
might be the CAT they say since it is original still.
anyways... i am happy i can move on from here, and get the paperwork done...
cheers
jelger
