The slip rings on the alternator are probably good till about 250K, then the alternator has to be replaced (no doubt some people get more but that's been my experience with Bosch alternators).

SPG9 or IPDUSA.com has adjustable internal VR's for Bosch alternators. I've installed an external regulator on an 86 volvo turbo and it's worked well for 10 years except when the alternator slip rings wore out around 250K...I put in new alternator and kept the new vr for spare on other cars...still running external regulator, set at 14.4-14.6 volts. Battery life is running five years plus...I replace batteries when they fail a load test.

I have an adjustable internal VR on the Bosch alternator on the 90 volvo turbo...set at 14.4v and works fine now for over three years.
