trivial, but there is the small chance of the airbag blowing if you don't follow the manual. In other words, you have to remove the airbag first before you remove the steering wheel. There's a little coil underneath the airbag that makes a positive connection to the airbag, winds/unwinds as the wheel turns. Chances are a break in that coil is what's causing your SRS failure. You may be able to replace the wheel with another one in better shape...chances are a junkyard replacement will already have the airbag/coil removed so if your wheel is the problem you might be in luck.
Get a manual and read it for SRS safety, but the basic thought is disconnect the battery and wait for 20-30 minutes before messing with the airbag. OTOH, lots of airbags have been stolen in less than 30 seconds with a live battery, so you can always do it that way!!!
