I had an 8VT with over 200K miles on it and it didn't need any valve work. I have no idea what other 8V turbo engines with that many miles experience since that was my first. I always thought the engine was a bit noisy when first starting, but would settle once warmed up. APC system was functional and so long as the outdoor air temp wasn't above 90, the boost was stock. I checked the valve/cam clearances once and found the numbers at or near spec. Up til the moment that engine died (lower engine oil feed channel failure) it was running at stock performance.
If your engine is noisy to the point of effecting the knock sensor and APC operation, I'm guessing it would have to be obvious - like an audible tic tic at all engine speeds.
