I took a look at my non-functioning A/C this weekend. with aalto's good advice, I jumped the connectors on the receiver/dryer, and in fact, my compressor and two fans did engage. The compressor made a bit of a "whirring" sound (like a wind-up toy car) though perhaps this was because I was jumping the connectors with a small piece of wire and it was engaging, then disengaging (and therefore spinning free) sort of on-and-off as the wire made contact.
however, there was a very light spatter of green near the compressor. I assume this was the leak dye the mechanic last used. by way of background, I asked for the system to be recharged when the car was in for something else many months ago. I was told they ran out of r-12 so it wasn't done. no big deal. when the engine was recently removed and replaced on another visit, when re-hooking the a/c parts I was told the system didn't work as the compressor needed to be replaced. I figure either a) it does need to be replaced or b) the bill was already getting VERY high on the engine/transmission front so when leaks or what have you were found it was figured to just not delve into it.
I know it's difficult to make a diagnosis with just this, but the fact that the compressor went on leads me to believe it is obviously not seized. after that, I'm not certain of the various things that can go wrong with it. the dye seemed to be mostly around the clutch, though perhaps it just spattered on it as it was spinning. if there was dye in the area, I assume there is a leak at one of the hoses going to the compressor. can the compressor itself have a leak? this would obviously be grounds for it being "shot" but unless it was cracked, I would figure, perhaps incorrectly, that the main points for a leak would be at the hose connections.
any ideas? thanks for any input.
