first a brief history (if a bit long, please skip to last two paragraphs): had a rebuilt 5 speed put in several months ago in an 88 900tc. installed by an independent who ordered it from Saab. I had an initial problem when I first picked it up where it was occasionally impossible to shift into 2nd. Brought it back. The mechanic was aware it would be difficult as he called Saab when he noticed it, but they were adamant that it would be "very hard shifting at first." but when I brought it back he agreed on the difference between "hard" and "impossible" and promptly contacted them again. while I have the part written down somewhere, a ball bearing type "preventer" was put in wrong by Saab (or whomever does their rebuilds). it was corrected, and all was well.
a couple months ago, I noticed the fluid level a touch low (down by the MIN mark). I've had a rebuild on another car "weep" a bit at the seals in the first few miles, and then be fine. I also imagine it could have left the shop a touch low after the first problem was corrected.
but what gives me a bit of concern is that the first shift of the day (or after the car has sat for several hours) can give clash between 1st and 2nd, and a touch from 2nd to 3rd. after that, it's fine. I can eliminate the clash by "blipping" the throttle at the shift, as in a non-syncromesh race car. But I guess my question is, should a healthy transmission have any "cold clash." while I'd think the answer would be No, the 900's transmissions have never been smooth in my memory, and I've been reminded, "I think it did that when the car was new."
It's got 920 miles on it now, and is due in for a fluid change at 1,000. it has a year warranty, but I don't look to be unreasonable (if it was a tie-rod or something, I'd have it replaced. transmissions are obviously a bit different). while I can eliminate the cold clash, I'm just wondering if the fact that exists is a bad sign for years down the road.
thanks,
Brian
