so i got this '85T for real cheap and the turbo was only doing base boost or something. i started playing with it and trying to figure out what the deal was with the APC system, etc. i decided that the base boost was too low to begin with, so i cranked about 2 turns on the wastegate and then i went for a test drive... it immediately started boosting much nicer and then that was it... i think i got one good boost out of it; then all the turbo would do is make a siren noise that sounds like the cops are following me. no boost, just whistle noise and car stalls... not really stalls, but just no boost pressure so all you get is the engine power part of the cycle and when you are supposed to get power from the turbo it's not there so you've only got part of your usual power. it sucks. someone told me the turbo is shot. they have one on an '85T at the pick n pull junkyard near my house and they only charge $40 for turbos? so i'm going to yank that one out tomorrow. i have some gaskets for the oil lines and the one that goes to the exhaust coming in the mail any time now. what else am i going to need to do to get this turbo working right? so basically i'm going to put this turbo in and then i guess i will probably have to figure out how to get out of base boost still. it's probably some common defect like everything else. so if anyone has had this problem with their '85 or something don't hesitate to let me know. seems like it could be so many things... leaky wastegate, bad knock sensor, bad apc, ??, etc... is it somehow possible that it was running at base boost because the turbo was dying?
