Like GM mentioned, you should have newer springs and shocks. I have intrax/bilstein on my 88 900T, but intrax/koni is also a well regarded combination. These better performing springs and shocks will reduce the likelyhood of rubbing, etc as bigger wheels are often wider than stock and will be closer to your fenders when they are moving over bumps or going around corners. It goes without speaking that it will improve handling too.
I have used 15 and 16 on classic 900's. 16" is a very pleasant upgrade where the wheels and tires are very economical.
I have used 15, 16, and 17 on 9-3's, and 16 and 17 on 9-5s. 17 is a little bit more connected feeling than 16, but not like the BIG difference between 15 and 16. I worry more about potholes, etc. with 17" Saab rims.
