Jack up both front wheels and turn the steering through its range with engine off. If it's stiff, chances are the problem is with the ujoint.
The ujoint fix takes 15 minutes.
1) Get a hair dryer and a can of PBlaster or liquid wrench.
2) open driver's side door and kneel on ground using floor mat as knee pad
3) reach under dash and pull up rubber steering column boot at firewall
4) spray ujoint with penetrant and let sit for a couple of minutes
5) heat up ujoint with hair dryer
6) turn whell back and forth
7) reheat with hair dryer
If you observe that the ujoint appears locked, a needle in the bearings may hve broken and jammed. Time for a used ujoint. You might want to have a shop deal with this if you're lazy, but not really that hard to do.
