dying fuel pump and surging idle

Out of the blue my '94Tconv wouldn't start. The fuel pump didn't run when I jumpered 12V to the fuel pump at the fuse. I read somewhere that you can bring a fuel pump back to life sometimes by whacking the underside of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet. Suprisingly the mallet trick worked. When I started the engine, though, it ran very rough, oscillating between 1000 rpm and 2000 rpm every second. Is this a symptom of a dying fuel pump? It seems like an odd symptom. No surging/rough operation above 2000 rpm.
Why does the "Lazarus" fuel pump trick (with the mallet) work? Is it something in the motor that is sensitive to slight movements?
I am really disappointed with the LH diagnostic socket on the 900 and quite honestly I'm afraid to use it. You can't tell from the Bentley picture what pin to connect to to read the check engine codes. My biggest complaint is that the socket has 12V power supplied to it, and it's too easy to accidently make contact with the power supply while trying to read codes. The 9000 uses a much better socket for diagnostics- it's almost impossible to create a short circuit using the 9000 diagnostic socket.
