How far down does the clutch pedal start to be solid? It should only be an inch or so down from the top of pedal travel. If it's significantly lower than that, my first guess is that the master cylinder seals are worn and you will want to change it. But ... if the master brake cylinder has been replaced, you may want to check to see if the end of the nipple that the hose from the fluid reservoir to the clutch master has been cut off. Sometimes people forget and the clutch hydraulics suffer.

If the clutch pedal goes way down before you start to feel resistance, it might also need to have a bushing put into the hole that the [jargon alert] clevis pin for the clutch master yoke goes into. When that gets sloppy, it can lead to a dragging clutch, even if the pedal is all the way down.

As far as the grinding into reverse goes, it could be that you don't have full clutch disengagement because of the hydraulic issue or that the [technical jargon alert] input shaft splines don't have any lubricant on them. It could also be that the pilot bearing is shot. The pilot bearing is a piece that the shaft the clutch disc is attached to - the input shaft - is supported by. If the bearing is siezed, the input shaft will turn whether or not the clutch is disengaged. It should not turn when the clutch is disengaged.

You don't say how many miles the car has on it but, I'd bet that it probably needs to have the pilot bearing replaced - I've only seen one 900 that didn't need a new one. It probably needs clutch hydraulic system work, too.
