Get a trunk-mounted carrier, as others have suggested. I got mine from Meijer for $20 and it holds 2 bikes very securely. It is made by Allan and it fits well. I am not sure about aerodynamic drag, but I am sure if you are driving 2500 miles in a loaded-down SAAB, Gas mileage is the least of your concerns!

Enjoy and good luck.
If you will have no use for a bike carrier after you arrive, I agree with some of the others, and ship it.
