I was pretty surprised about that myself. I only figured it out after trying every other nut in my garage. I think the three sided nuts are supposed to be dificult to get off to prevent hot wiring the car.
I used a cold chisel and hammer to get the nuts loose, then needle nose to spin them off. I think you will be doing yourself a favor if you pull the drivers seat to do this job. It is really easy to get off/on and it gives you a whole lote more room to work. Getting the console back in with both seats still there will be a pain in the behind.
