Well, you got good advice about a car tending to deteriorate faster while parked for three years, but at least you got a good price!! At a minimum I would remove the spark plugs and put some engine oil down there for a day or at least a few hours, then slowly turn the engine, by hand if possible to make sure nothing is frozen with rust. Then run it with the starter motor a few muinutes to blow the oil around good. You probably need a new battery too...but maybe you got lucky. Next, assuming it starts...warm it up a bit, then change all the fluids, I'm speaking about antifreeze in the radiator (use the good stuff), brake fluid, engine oil, transmission oil, the works. You will find proceedures for everything here on the saabnet BB. You might want to figure a way to flush the cooling system also, just to be safe. Once you start to drive the car maybe something else will come up, Cv joints come to mind, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it.
As far as a special mechanic, are you going to take the car to Sweden or something if we tell you to? Eastern European machanics have been fixing everything under the sun since WWII, so I don't think a SAAB is going to confuse them too much. I mean if they can keep Eastern Bloc cars running, this should be a snap!! A Saab 900 is not constructed conventionaly but this BB will give you all the answers, use the SEARCH function a lot!
Good luck,
John
