I have a Pioneer Premier deck in my van that's about the same vintage and quality as the OEM Clarion deck in my SAAB. I live in Richmond VA, and with the Pioneer deck, I am able to pick up an independant classic rock channel out of Fredricksburg, about 50 miles to the north, along with a classic rock station out of Norfolk. I also like listening to a local Jazz channel that's independant, and only puts out a few thousand watts. These stations sound great on the Pioneer despite their distances and lack of range.
With the Clarion deck, all these stations are pretty much unreceiveable unless I'm sitting in the right spot. Even the big clearchannel "power stations" and other manstream stations don't come in with full clarity. The station that sounds the best is the hard rock station less than a mile from my house.
The audio quality of the tuner is significantly lower than the cassette player. The cassette player puts out really good highs and sounds quite nice. The hard rock / metal station is the only station I know of that will open the tuner up to the same fidelity that the tape deck puts out. Even that station however gets dull sounding after I drive across town (and other stations sound clearer as I get near their antennas).
I have checked the antenna connections at the antenna itself, and at the back of the deck. I unplugged at both locations and I did hear a significant change in sensitivity, meaning the antenna is actually working. Now, I want to put an aftermarket CD/ tuner in. What I don't want to do however is replace the deck and after spending the money discover that I've got an antenna or wiring problem behind the scenes.
Are the tuners in the Clarion decks just poor? Or does it sound like I've got an antenna / wiring problem?
