There should be no backpressure with either 2.5" or 3" exhaust systems but a larger diameter pipe will slow the exhaust flow exiting the turbocharger and will reduce some of the low to mid range engine performance. Race vehicles are usually up in the higher horsepower and higher engine rpm and will need a larger exhaust size. I have both a race and street 900 and find the 2.5" better for low end to mid range. The 3" will give me some benefit over 5000-6000 rpm on my race car but it revs to 7500.
Look at the performance BB for someone who put a 3" system on and lost about 9 horsepower at about 4000 rpm.
