I had a pinion bearing go bad, so I took a shot at rebuilding my 5 speed. After some unexplained electric problems (starter wouldmn't crank, I fixed this the way you fix computers, unplugged everything, then plugged it back in) it seems there is no neutral on the gearbox. When the starter kicks in, the car lurches forward, although it is definately in neutral. What can cause this problem? I suspect improper clearence setting up the pinion bearing. This is the part I sent out for a "pro" to do. He measured down to the nut, then put shims for spacing UNDER the nut, instead of on top. When I installed the input shaft, everything seemed rather tight.

also, after I got the engine cranking, still won't start. I guess I'll try unplugging all the starting circuit stuff, then plugging it back in again.
