Well, here's what I did.
My turn signal would not stay in position when used. I took the same black plastic cover off and took the two screws that held the turn signal switch on the column out. Disconnected the cruise control harness and put the switch on the workbench.
The hard way:
Its a sealed unit, that is, the plastic top that has some copper connectors on its underside is riveted to the aluminum box that makes up the rest of the switch box. Contact between those copper pieces and pieces inside the box make your signals work. I used my drill press to drill out the rivets and pried off the plastic cover.
At the end of the lever there is a spring loaded tiny wheel that falls into two small valleys machined into the aluminum box, When you take the switch apart make sure you don't lose this wheel.
Take a Dremel barrel shaped bit or small barrel file and enlarge the valley that the wheel falls into. Its on the inside of the aluminum box, Clean out all of the grease and you will see it. The wheel runs up a ramp and then sits in this valley. The ramp wears away over time, and the switch can't stay in position.
Use a drill press to drill a small diameter hole down into the aluminum case to accept some small screws. The drill press is not necessary, but it makes the process easier, thank the lord for free trade with China and Home Depot, my drill press was $79. I used some coarse grade screws from an electrical appliance (I save everything in a junk box) to reattach the plastic cover to the aluminum box. Worked perfectly, my 92 900S now feels new, (at the turn signal anyway!).
The easy way:
Remove the turn signal switch and call Jim at sobstory (board sponsor). He has (had) some 900 parts cars that could have your part for much less effort. Just rebolt it in.
Based on your descrption, use the easy way. The trick to keeping these cars running is solving the small issues as they occur. Your problem falls into the annoying category, like drooping headliners, it will not leave you stranded somewhere.
Hope this helps.
PS: I am impressed that you have the correct star bits to remove the plastic cover - that tells me you can do this! Let us know how you make out.
