I don't have immediate experience with your specific situation, but when I installed an 88 tranny to go with the previous 82 shifter rod assembly, I discovered the 88 tranny coupling unit (the piece that includes the coupling, plus the rubber vibration absorber) was too short. I needed to use the longer coupling unit from the 82 tranny. To do that I had to pop the tapered pin from both coupling assembly units. No way to simply hammer that pin out so I used the C clamp with nut spacer method. (do search on here)
