Gees, shooting from the hip, he might mean replacing the entire shifter assembly in the console.
My guess is that the rubber shifter coupling (on the shifter rods, between the shifter and the transmission) either went south or that the pinch bolt on the coupling loosened up. If it's a square coupling (like SAAB used on the '92 900s and the 9000s, the rubber might have died completely.
Verify what he means before you authorise any repairs. Maybe even take a look for yourself.
