There may *just* be enought room to slide the A-arm out past the block if you remove the alternator (maybe the A/C compressor, too) and the intake manifold. No guarantees, but it might just be possible.
Depending on your taste for removing and replacing those engine bits (not to mention time and your capacity for enjoyment of cuts, scrapes, and bruises), it may be more to your liking to pull the engine like Justin mentioned.
Townsend Imports has a good page on alternator R&R. I'd post a link to the page, but the site is down for the moment. When it's up, you may want to save a copy of the page to your local harddrive.
I'm not in a position to run out and take a look at my car right now, but it's worth it for you to take a gander at it.
I hope that your brother is going to pay for all of this - at least the parts. I don't even want to think of how it all looks.
