Those are your two basic choices at this point. I have a '91 900 S 2.1L that I bolted a Mitsu TD-05 up to it (first was a T-3, but TD-05 has no lag in comparison). The power gain was amazing.
The 2.1L already produces 140hp, a bit over all other NA 900s. One thing that I would highly reccommend is to be sure that your headgasket is in top order. I have not had ANY problems (knock knock) with mine since I bought the car with 80k (turbo conversion at 130k, now at 175k).

One thing that was not said that you will also need is the oil cooler and the different oil filter mount (the lines tap into the mount for the cooler).
