GET THE HEAD PLANNED and checked for cracks! If you do not, the new gasket will blow out soon. I doubt that the shop would even repair the car w.o. having the head done. Where I work, Saab Shop in West Palm Beach,FL every headgasket job we get it goes to the meachine shop...overheated or not. See, if it blows in 5k, then we have to rip it all apart again ;-(
The cost does not seem too bad for the replacement, however the headwork seems high. Just a simple plain and valve seals should be $100ish, crack check about $75ish, and if you have them do the valve guides, figure another $75-100. So $450 would not be bad, if they were doing all the above. Hell, for $400 you can get a good, complete used head!
Just be sure to get the work done, it will cost you much more in the end if not done... (and time too)
