Hi folks, just a follow-up in case anyone else encounters the problem I've been dealing with for over a month now. My 1991 900S had been doing the opposite of most people's springtime ABS episodes-- intermittantly, usually on hot or humid days, I would have random difficulty braking. The pedal would go rock hard, and the car would pull sideways slightly. The brake fluid and ABS warning lights never went on before, during, or after these episodes. The lights did work, came on for a few seconds when I'd start the car, and it took 10+ pumps of the brakes to get the lights to come on intentionally.
When I took the car to Saabtech in Chicago, they thought the problem might be solved by simply cleaning off corroded contacts. This did not help.
The second attempt was to change the ABS pump pressure switch (a $425 part.) This did not help either. Saabtech was supposed to give me back the old pressure switch to hold onto in case that wasn't what was wrong. They did not do so, and when I asked about it, after some evasion, they admitted they'd broken it in the process of getting it out! So it was agreed that future work would be done with the price of the pressure switch subtracted from the bill. Funny how they could never get around to looking at my car when I'd bring it in for appointments after that...
At this point the guys at Saabtech tried to tell me that what the car was doing was normal and I'm just not used to ABS!
So I took my business elsewhere. After consulting Borhan from Peterson in Skokie, it seems that the problem is being caused by the ABS valve body, located near the left front fender. I don't know if this has fixed the problem since it has only occured irregularly in the past, but Borhan knew exactly what I was describing about the braking difficulty, and confidently made his diagnosis, adding that the other symptom (which I hadn't mentioned to him yet) was the sideways pulling.
I hope this is it, folks. So if your car has these symptoms, check out the ABS valve body, and if you can't do it yourself go to Peterson. Saabtech was great for my routine maintenance but way off the mark when a problem arose. Very disappointing!
