If the cable that you shorted was in the "other" car while your battery was still connected to the jumper cables, you could have fried the alternator diodes, perhaps damaged the ECU and also killed your battery. If the you just grounded the pos cable in your car while the cables were connected to the other car, I think the short did no damage to your car.
To sort this out, you might invest in a multimeter. Check battery voltage at battery. Should be 12.6 when fully charged, so don't expect quite that. Then have a helper turn on the headlights for about 15 seconds while you're reading battery voltage. The voltage should drop very slowly and when you turn the lights off, the voltage should climb slowly. If the voltage drops very fast and then jumps back to the unloaded reading instantly, you have an internal battery short. Time for a new battery.
If battery checks OK, take your meter and check for battery voltage between the big terminal on the starter solenoid and engine block. It should be the same as across terminals. If not the cable might be broken(unlikely). If you find voltage at the big terminal, have a helper turn the ignition key to start, while you check for battery voltage between the smaller spade terminal on the solenoid and the block. If you get voltage at this terminal, the starter solenoid is shot-replace starter. If no voltage at this terminal, the problem could very well be the ignition relay as suggested by Thor. Replace relay and see what happens.
Engine whould crank now. If engine cranks, but no start, then you need to trouble shoot the ignition and fuel injection ECU. If tach bounces when you turn the key to start, the ignition is probably OK, and the problem is with the ECU or relays powering it and fuel pump. If no tach bounce, you need to test and fix the ignition module and/or Hall Effect system. Once this is fixed car should start. If still NG, the problem is with the ECU and relays.
Get a Bentley manual. Haynes is poor substitute.
