1990 900- head gasket failing?

Just looking for some inputs:
My 1990 900 (non-turbo) is showing signs of head gasket failure-
* I lose about 1/4 to 1/2 of the coolant in the expansion bottle every day or so and I can't find any leaks or coolant on the ground.
* Bubbles in the coolant bottle.
* White smoke, but only if I start/stop the car before it is fully warmed up. Otherwise, no sign.
* Recent (1 month ago) compression test showed good results - readings were ~180 for all 4 cylinders.
I got 3 estimates for replacement and the range is $850 to $1200, depending on whether the head needs to be machined.
So the dilemma is whether at the age and mileage (246,000+) it's worth the investment. My emotional attachment to the car (I've owned in since 1995 at 70,000 miles) says yes, but my common sense says no.
Also, I considered the DIY option, but I'm not an experienced engine mechanic and the procedure in the Bentley manual and on http://www.twinsaabs.com looks complex...so...what to do?
The car has (within the last year) had a new battery, new tires, and new brakes (pads and rotors), and a new heater control valve just 2 weeks ago- (I had thought this was the source of the coolant leak).
My daughter has been using this car for around town/near home transportation...
Thanks for any input!
