The noise when turning sounds like a CV joint. Does the noise change with speed? But the crack sound I dont know about. I would look at the CV boots. Are they riped? A CV can be bad without a riped boot. But if it is riped then 9 times in 10 it is bad due to road trash getting in. I have not see a control arm snap but that does not mean it does not happen.
