Well, the slave cylinder won't exactly go bad overnight, but at some point in the wear cycle, it'll reach a threshold at which the seals will start to leak massively. If the clutch hydraulics in an old non-maintained vehicle were recently bled, the crud that seals the old seals might have washed away. This isn't to say that the fluid shouldn't be flushed periodically, of course.
Your best chance of finding where the hydraulic fluid leak is coming from is underneath the car. If the slave has gone bad, you'll probably see some brake fluid drips coming from the drain hole on the bottom of the bellhousing. There's just enough room to slide under the front of the car and reach up over the skid plate (in with the oily grit - have lots of hand cleaner around :-) and get as sample. Then you can smell for brake fluid.
