First, check all of the components on the CIS system using the Bentley Manual. It's a little tedious, but it'll save you a lot of money in buying parts that you don't need. If you don't have one, they're a little hard to find for the 8V engines, but I got one on ebay a while back.
Anyway...
I had very similar problems with the same year car. I checked and/or replaced almost every component on the CIS system until I replaced the warm-up regulator. once I did that the car didn't start at all, so my natural reaction was %&^#%^#! However, I rationalized the situation. Since the cars performance changed dramatically, albeit for the worse, unlike the other "fixes" I made to that point I figured that it was the correct fix. What was missing was an adjustment to the fuel/air mixture. This is done with an allen wrench and a Bosch Dwell Meter (Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.) With the correct adjustments I was able to start the car and get a reading. From there I was able to fine tune the adjustment and the car finally ran great after two months of lousy running.
